ETP Plant for Metal Steel Industry

ETP for Metal Steel Industry

In metal industries, Effluent is generated from Metal surface treatment like galvanizing, Hot dip galvanizing, Anodizing, Electroplating, Electropolishing, Hard chrome plating, Phosphating etc. Here we will study about characteristic and treatment for this kind of effluent.

Characteristic of Effluent

Effluent generated from metal surface treatment can be acidic or alkaline depends on treatment and also contain various inorganic and organic compounds like Heavy metals, Suspended solids, oil, Heavy TDS etc.

Treatment Scheme

ETP for Steel Industry Process flow diagram

Screen Chamber:
The screening is achieved by placing a screen made out of vertical bars, placed across the Effluent flow.
The function of the bar screen is to prevent entry of solid particles/ articles above a certain size.

Equalization Tank:
The Effluent from the bar screen chamber comes to the equalization tank. The equalization tank is the first collection tank in ETP.
Its main function is to act as buffer: To collect the incoming raw sewage that comes at widely fluctuating rates, and pass it on to the rest of the STP at a steady (average) flow rate.

Lime/HCL Dosing:
Lime/HCL dosing is act as a pH correction and helps to neutral the pH of Effluent.

Alum Dosing :
Alum acts as a flocculants allowing particles to cling together forming larger particles which in turn fall from suspension and settle in the bottom of tanks.

Poly Dosing :
The poly dosing increases the sedimentation rate, provides clean water, and thickens the sludge at the pond’s bottom for easier management and disposal.

Neutralization Tank :
The aim of neutralisation is to modify an acid or base water flow to a neutral pH (approximately 7). The most important objectives are to make the wastewater treatable using biological purification and/or make it comply with discharge criteria.

Filter Press :
A filter press is a piece of equipment used in liquid/solid separation. Specifically, the filter press separates the liquids and solids using pressure filtration, wherein slurry is pumped into the filter press and is dewatered under pressure.
A typical filter press cycle consists of the following steps:
Filter plate closing
Filling
Filtration
Cake Drying
Squeezing of membrane
Filter plate opening

PSF :
Pressure Sand Filter: This is tertiary water treatment process in which water is passed through multi layers of filter media consisting graded sand, pebbles and gravels layers. The contaminants in the water are captured in the media bed and filtered water passes into the discharge manifold at the bottom of the tanks.
PSF is used for the removal of suspended matter, as well as floating and sinkable particles.

ACF :
Activated Carbon Filter: Outlet from PSF passed through ACF.
ACF with granular activated carbon (GAC) is a proven option to remove certain chemicals, particularly organic chemicals, from water. GAC filters also can be used to remove chemicals that give objectionable odours or tastes to water such as hydrogen sulphide or chlorine, thereby making the water suitable for discharge or use in manufacturing processes.

Treated Water Characteristics

The treated effluent from the ETP will have critical clear physical property but contains High TDS. For further reuse of this water or Discharge according Pollution control board norms, It needs to provide further treatment in ZLD plants like MEE or MVR.
